2 My dear brothers and sisters, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, never think some people are more important than others. 2 Suppose someone comes into your church meeting wearing nice clothes and a gold ring. At the same time a poor person comes in wearing old, dirty clothes. 3 You show special attention to the one wearing nice clothes and say, “Please, sit here in this good seat.” But you say to the poor person, “Stand over there,” or, “Sit on the floor by my feet.” 4 What are you doing? You are making some people more important than others, and with evil thoughts you are deciding that one person is better.
5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters! God chose the poor in the world to be rich with faith and to receive the kingdom God promised to those who love him. 6 But you show no respect to the poor. The rich are always trying to control your lives. They are the ones who take you to court. 7 And they are the ones who speak against Jesus, who owns you.
8 This royal law is found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbour as you love yourself.”If you obey this law, you are doing right. 9 But if you treat one person as being more important than another, you are sinning. You are guilty of breaking God’s law. 10 A person who follows all of God’s law but fails to obey even one command is guilty of breaking all the commands in that law. 11 The same God who said, “You must not be guilty of adultery,”also said, “You must not murder anyone.”So if you do not take part in adultery but you murder someone, you are guilty of breaking all of God’s law.
Our passage today come from James 2 v 1-11, I know it is long and I hope you took the time to read it and be blessed by it!
v1 “My Brothers and sisters as glorious believers in or glorious Lord Jesus Christ, never think some people are more important than others”
BOOM! Sure we never do that. What about that look you shot in the school hall way, or when someone asked you for help at school and you shrugged them off. When you went to camp you were more than happy to help with the dishes but when you came home you were too “tired” to even clean your bedroom.
Our actions reflect highly on God. To some people we may be the only Jesus they ever meet and by honouring this verse we can show them Gods heart. What a gift we have to be able to show the unimaginable to every lovely person around us. I know it can seem like a big task, but here is the thing you are not called to do it by yourself.
1. You were called to community – Hebrews 10v24-25 says;
24 Let us think about each other and help each other to show love and do good deeds. 25 You should not stay away from the church meetings, as some are doing, but you should meet together and encourage each other. Do this even more as you see the day coming.
2. You were called to lean on Gods strength- 1 Samuel 30v6
The men in the army were threatening to kill David with stones, which greatly upset David. Each man was sad and angry because his sons and daughters had been captured, but David found strength in the Lord his God.
Even in the fear of death, David leaned on Gods strength, which pulled him through, how beautiful! If he could do we can certainly do it in our day-to-day.
v11-The same God who said, “You must not be guilty of adultery,”also said, “You must not murder anyone.” So if you do not take part in adultery but you murder someone, you are guilty of breaking all of God’s law.
What if it doesn’t mean physical murder? What if it means spiritual, emotional?
Holding on to the word of God with all you got and relentlessly studying it, is great, but if you are not going to share it or release it, how can it impact the world?
In chapter three it carries on talking about the tongue and the evil it can do, your words matter, we all know this, we need no lecture- I know. Gossip is deadly, it can completely destroy a persons self-esteem , make them re-think their worth and everything they are.
We are not called to this!
We are called to be fruit bearing, life-giving, hope-filled, lunatics, who build up everyone around us, So before you go on your way today, please pray. I know the God who loves you wants to be your strength, your fortress, your hope and your freedom, so let him in and before you spread gossip please think of spreading light first.
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its salty taste, it cannot be made salty again. It is good for nothing, except to be thrown out and walked on.
14 “You are the light that gives light to the world. A city that is built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 And people don’t hide a light under a bowl. They put it on a lamp stand so the light shines for all the people in the house. 16 In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5v13-16
