We each carried out our servant assignment. I planted the seed, Apollos watered the plants, but God made you grow. It’s not the one who plants or the one who waters who is at the center of this process but God, who makes things grow. Planting and watering are menial servant jobs at minimum wages. What makes them worth doing is the God we are serving. – 1 Corinthians 3 : 5-9
Four o’clock cane around the corner. I sat on our yellow sofa and switched the channel to 7. It was my favourite! Art attack was about to come on. There was one segment in the show were they got teams together. They folded a piece of paper in three and each team member had to draw part of the body of a monster. Sometimes they unfolded the paper and it was the ugliest thing seen. Sometimes it was beautiful &, really cool- surprisingly.
But every time whatever the outcome they had to work together. For each person had a different idea what their monster would look like. In 2 Corinthians 3 its a bit like this.
Paul is annoyed at the church in Corinth as they are following earthly leaders instead of heavenly leaders. This is so easy to do. Also completely understandable after all we are called to honour our leaders. That’s where it matters that you get the right end of Jesus’ stick! They looked to Paul and Apollos as leaders to follow. They forgot their foundation is in Christ. As a baby grows just like a seed, that is planted it needs nutrients, water and sleep. Babies need to recharge themselves. But a baby doesn’t make them self grow. It happens naturally. Yes they put work into pushing trolleys and crawling but the parents help the child. The course of nature makes the baby grow. This is just like us spiritually. Someone plants the seed of faith in us. Someone comes a long and waters us with kindness, generosity and most importantly friendship. And the father does the rest. Yes we get in community with believers, we go to church, we read our bibles. But it is impossible for us too say we are saved by us! We are saved by grace on the path of righteousness by faith. All a beautiful gift from God.
What make this growth worthwhile. Because growths messy. It’s often uncomfortable and we will make mistakes. The God we serve. The God we serve makes life possible. He makes joy, peace hope and restoration part of our lives. Yes maybe we serve him for nothing- in earthly terms but our fortune is in heaven. We serve him Freely. But when you stop and think of the goodness of God it makes sense to.
