Why Take Care of Yourself?

We know it’s important, yet to many of us taking care of ourselves is only an afterthought. Yes we are called to care for others, to be selfless, but we shouldn’t neglect ourselves in the process.

Recently I have noticed the importance of knowing our “why.” Why do I want to be healthy and workout? To look like Gigi Hadid? Or to glorify God and worship him through looking after ourselves? I’m not going to lie, looking like Gigi Hadid would be pretty great, but that designs already been taken- be your own kind of fabulous!

In thinking about my “why” I’ve collected a few thoughts on why it’s important to take care of ourselves. Hopefully through exploring these we will be able to care for ourselves whilst always focusing on Jesus and fulfilling His plan for us. So lets go!!!

1 You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup

Hebrews 10:24 says “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and do good works.” As Christians Jesus calls us to pour into those around us, but if we ourselves are empty it is practically impossible to impact those around us. Therefore it is so important to take time alone with God to be filled with His spirit, to be renewed and ready to build up those around us. Take the example of Jesus, he was constantly on the mission field; serving, healing and teaching, but He did not neglect his prayer life. In fact in Luke 6:12 the evangelist writes that “He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.” We are called to serve but we are also called to pause, reflect and pray.

2 Our Bodies are a Gift

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Ever have those days where you feel crap about yourself? you don’t even hold your body worthy of being looked after. We all can feel like that sometimes, but we need to remember these bodies are God’s gift to us, they don’t belong to us therefore looking after our body is actually a form of worship and gratitude to God for what He has given us.

3 Fulfil your Potential

As I said already God has given us this body as a gift. I so often take my health for granted, but at times I am overwhelmed with gratefulness for the healthy body God has given me. Never take what you have for granted, instead unlock your potential- find out how strong you really are when you work out or how far you can actually run. God calls us to live life to the full, of course this is not merely referring to our physical well being, but our physical well being affects our spiritual being-fulfil your potential, push yourself and unlock the gifts God has given you.
